WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (September 19, 2014) – Gunster, one of Florida’s oldest and largest full-service business law firms, is pleased to announce that one of its West Palm Beach attorneys previously appointed to a judicial nominating commission has just been elected the commission’s vice chair.

In the fall of 2012, Gunster attorney Keith Sonderling was appointed by Florida Governor Rick Scott to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Fourth District Court of Appeal.

In August 2014, Keith Sonderling was elected by his co-commissioners to serve as vice chair of the Fourth District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission. His role as vice chair will run through July 2015, and he will remain on the commission through July 2016.

Judicial Nominating Commissions are nine-member groups appointed by the governor who locate, recruit, investigate and evaluate applicants for judicial office vacancies. Commission members submit three to six names of the most highly qualified applicants to the governor, who makes the final selection from the list.

Why is it important?

Appeals of trial court verdicts are reviewed by three-judge panels in one of five district courts of appeal, depending on the court’s geographical location. The Fourth District Court of Appeal is based in West Palm Beach and covers the following circuit courts: 15th (Palm Beach County), 17th (Broward County) and 19th (Martin, Indian River, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties).
