There is no getting around it: smartphones are changing the workplace environment. It’s the rare person who doesn’t carry a smartphone, tablet or similar device with them at all times.

Many people use these devices to help them on their jobs. But even for those employers who don’t own or control the smartphones used by their employees, the risks to business are real.

Smartphones used to access or store company information may be lost, stolen or hacked into. When that happens, employers may be liable for a host of issues – whether or not the employee even reports the incident. Indeed, smartphone use on the job increases the potential for data security breaches (and even wage & hour claims), leaving employers open to liability.

Employers should educate themselves about the risks associated with the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) workplace trend.
