Bob White, a shareholder in Gunster’s technology law practice, spoke to a Jacksonville Business Journal reporter recently about a matter making headlines.

According to the article by Christian Conte of the Journal, personal information of Winn-Dixie Stores’ employees — such as names, birth dates and Social Security numbers — was breached in October, and the store notified its employees in January. Now a former Winn-Dixie employee has sued the company and its vendor, Purchasing Power LLC, for more than $5 million, saying that employees should’ve been notified sooner.

Litigation of this nature is becoming more common, White told the Journal. White, who is not involved in the lawsuit, indicated there are actions employers can take to help prevent this type of security breach, including research and monitoring of third-party providers.
