Bruce Lamb, Gunster shareholder and leader of the firm’s health law practice, was published recently in the Construction Today blog.

Lamb indicates that as more retirees flock to Florida looking for property and access to health care services, housing that offers both may be a boon to retirees and developers alike.

In short, he asks, why not build more senior housing?

The traditional model of senior housing, a “Continuing Care Retirement Community” (CCRC) provides a place to live and health care services, in exchange for an initial fee and monthly charges. There are just 70 CCRCs in Florida today.

But there is also a less formalized model, called “Planned Services Communities” (PSCs). These are basically regular housing developments that offer health care services to its residents directly or via a vendor.
