On Thursday, September 13, 2012, Gunster representatives participated in the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Healthiest Employers 2012 awards luncheon.

At the Gunster table (left to right): Brenda Garcia (Benefits Coordinator/HR), Robert Chase (Office Manager/Tampa), Julie Renfroe and Arlene Bryson (Legal Secretaries/Wellness Committee members/Tampa).

Gunster, a Florida-based law firm with 10 locations throughout the state, including an office in Tampa, placed second in its award category of 2 – 40 employees, with a score of 69.8; first place in the category went to St. Francis Sleep Allergy and Lung Institute.

Gunster’s Julie Renfroe holds Gunster’s award in the “Healthiest Employers 2012” competition.

The law firm provides a generous budget for its wellness initiative. Gunster also subsidizes the health insurance premium for employees and contributes one-half of the deductible for employees and their families enrolled in one of the high-deductible plans.

The firm’s most successful program so far is through GlobalFit’s Destination: You program, which uses an accelerometer attached to the shoe that records movement. The information automatically uploads to a website upon walking into the office, and records participants’ steps on a secure website. No recordkeeping or logging-on is required unless participants want to manage the type of steps they are taking (the device can detect different kinds of exercise and participants can get greater credit for their movements if they register the type of exercise they were doing).

In these and other ways, Gunster is helping its employees “Get Well, Be Well and Stay Well,” the firm’s wellness committee slogan.
