Gaida Zirkelbach, a shareholder in Gunster’s technology law practice, spoke to a writer from Law360 about the recent news that Australia’s privacy commissioner indicated he may reopen the investigation into Google’s Street View technology and its data collection and retention practices.

According to the Law360 article by Allison Grande, the commissioner instructed Google to “immediately destroy” the sensitive personal information (including emails and passwords) it had earlier said it destroyed.

Google could face fines if an investigation is reopened. However, the amount of fines regulators have imposed to date are peanuts, Zirkelbach told Law360. But that could change under proposed amendments to privacy laws.
